Medicare Part A – hospital coverage.

Medicare Part B – Other non-hospital coverage, such PCP and specialist and outpatient expenses. Must pay a monthly premium for any type of plan you choose (Traditional or Managed Care).

Medicare Part D – Pharmacy coverage.

Traditional Medicare: Most seniors are pleased with their Traditional Medicare plan (Part A and B) mainly because they can see any providers in the country that accept Medicare. Exceptions to Traditional Medicare are unpredictable out-of-pocket costs and the lack of vision, dental, and pharmacy coverage.

Supplemental Plans (Med Supp.): Seniors can supplement their Traditional Medicare plan with Medicare Supplement plans that cover vision, dental and pharmacy services but will have to pay monthly premiums for them individually. Additionally, once you purchase pharmacy supplement, you will continue to pay for deductibles and coinsurance for pharmacy expenses. Supplemental plans pay 100% of your Part A (hospital) deductible and coinsurance and all  Part B (non hospital medical) expenses once you meet the Part B deductible. Premiums typically range between $50 and $250 a month and often increase in price as you get older. If you choose a “high-deductible” plan, your plan pays 100% of your costs after you pay $2,340 out-of-pocket.

Private Medicare Plans/ Managed Care Plans (Medicare Part C): Private Managed Care plans like, Humana and Cigna solve these issues and cover medical, vision, dental and pharmacy benefits.  An additional plus is that Private Medicare Plans cover preventive care such as screenings and immunizations for free and also cover a fitness membership. They also provide allowances for over-the-counter medications and devices, home meal and grocery delivery, and non-medical transportation. Several exceptions are that members can only see providers in their area (unless there is an emergency) and will still pay coinsurance and deductibles but will only have to pay certain annual maximum limit amounts.  In 2020, the average Medicare Advantage out-of-pocket maximum is about $4,900. The other negative to Private Managed Care plans are that vision and dental coverage are mostly only routine and preventive benefits. Seniors will have to pay roughly 50% of most non routine services. Additional costs are copays (~$5 for PCP, ~$25 for Specialists and ~$50 for urgent care).
